The Patriot Run | Community Spirit
The Patriots Run is an annual event held to commemorate the tragic events of September 11th. With this event we remember, not only those victims who were lost, but also those soldiers, police, firefighters and others who served this country both on that day and every day thereafter. This is a unique event in that it is a 9 hour and 11 minute run/walk around a one-mile loop course. They are expecting around 450 runners from across America and Canada. From a base in Afghanistan 4000 soldiers are planned to run 9.11 KM coinciding with the end of the Patriots Run.
There is also a FREE concert from noon to 9. Volunteers have no choice but to be included in this family-friendly concert featuring fantastic local bands! Kids will love Peanut Butter Hamster, which is the 1st act from noon to 1:30. There are many other activities planned as well. All proceeds from the run go to the Salvation Army in Olathe.
Volunteers are needed throughout the day. Their volunteer schedule is flexible so if you are able to give some time, even just a couple hours, they would love the help.
- Early Morning to Noon:
Set up tents, tables, chairs. Drive pins and set up 300 flag display. Sort t-shirts and prepare registration/pick-up desk. Make sandwiches, fill coolers, mix Gatorade.
- Noon to 9:11:
The race/marathon starts at noon.
Hand out water. They need a BUNCH of people for this as most runners drink every lap. Last year they had 8 to 10 people on the line. Volunteers can give as much time as they can. They are estimating going through 600 gallons of Gatorade and 600 to 800 gallons of water.
Food. Continue preparing sandwiches. With the extreme distance many runners go they feed the runners sandwiches (PB&J, cut fruit). Sandwiches and fruit are prepared onsite by volunteers and given to runners during the race.
Clean up. Runners have very bad aim with the cups. Volunteers are needed to help keep the grounds clean.
Registration. Runners show up all day--even as late at 8pm or so to do their laps. All data has to be input and relayed to the timers to keep the computer aware of all runners and the timing correct.
- 9:11 to 11PM:
Tear down. After the final awards at 9:11 everything put gets taken down.
