KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Facebook is now the proud new owner of Instagram, a popular photo sharing app — or they will be at the end of the quarter.

After Facebook made the announcement on Monday, some Instagram users have deleted their accounts. According to Mashable, some Instagram users fear Facebook will use the location tags on their photos to target ads, however neither Facebook or Instagram have said the data will actually be used this way.

What Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO, did say in a Facebook post on Monday is that his company is “focused on building the best experience for sharing photos.” By acquiring Instagram and its nine member team, Zuckerberg believes he and his team will be better able to provide Facebook users with awesome photos and sharing capabilities.

Zuckerberg continued saying that Facebook is committed to building and growing Instagram independently.

“Millions of people around the world love the Instagram app and the brand associated with it, and our goal is to help spread this app and brand to even more people,” he said.

One thing Instagram users who aren’t planning to jump ship will be happy to hear is that Facebook will keep features that allow Instagram photos to be published on other social networks.

Saving your Instagram photos

For those who are still determined to end their relationship with Instagram but fear losing their photos, there are a number of sites that will save them for you.

Instaport: Downloads library into a zip file.

Copygram: Web interface for Instragram that allows you to download your photos from other users’ feeds.

Social FolderDrop: A “dropbox for social media”. This site lets you back up your Instgram photos and other photos housed on Twitter, Facebook Flickr, Picassa, SmugMug, Google Docs and YouTube profiles.
